It seems like everybody and their mom is into yoga these days. Which is actually pretty great, if you’re like me and are just now starting to get into it. That means there’s a plethora of resources online for ways to practice yoga in your most comfortable space; at home! But it can be a serious disappointment when you look into beginners yoga videos and find that you need modified poses and simpler stretches. Something more accessible for those of us with larger bodies or who need guidance on modifications. So, I looked into it and guess what? These resources do exist! I created this list of people who are doing the damn thing and showing us what fat friendly yoga looks like!

Before we get into it, lets talk yoga mats.

Now, standard yoga mats tend to be fairly narrow and thin. This means the floor feels harder on bodies of size. Check out some extra wide and extra thick yoga mats online. This one from YogaAccessories boasts a 50% increase in size to traditional yoga mats. And this one from Clever Yoga has “high density padding” so your knees don’t hurt afterward. Awesome! Grab yourself one, watch some of these videos listed below, and you’re well on your way.

Heads up – these folks have many videos that vary in skill/ability. Find one that works best for you and where you’re at!

Websites for your accessible yoga needs

Yoga Download is one of my absolute favorites, though their streaming service does cost $12/month. Its pretty reasonable though, considering they have hundreds of videos with varying levels. The two I personally love most are Gentle and Accessible Yoga and Wheelchair Seated Yoga. You can try either of those videos for $5 and see if you like their style!

Buddha Body Yoga is a pretty sweet resource I found while doing my research. They are located in NYC, however they do have an accessible yoga class that streams live every Saturday morning! They also have some great tips on supportive yoga tools you can use to make your yoga experience more accessible.

Need a few more? Check out Body Positive Yoga, Body Love Yoga, and AccessibleYoga.

    • I use they/them pronouns. Do you? Whether its my Mx. hat from @genuinevalentine , the pronoun pins I made with my love @fatgirlflow , my various tees, or my whole damn they/them arm tattoo, I always welcome more opportunities to have something to wear and point at whilst I awkwardly correct people who misgender me😂 Check the link in my bio to grab a shirt for yourself👌🏼
.
Ps. Im wearing a 5x. It fits surprisingly well for someone who prefers a 6x. Still, I wish they had larger sizes available, too.

    • I’ve got mental health and wellbeing on my mind. What are some signs that tell you you gotta reach out, get support, or work on your mental hygiene in whatever ways work for you?
.
For me, its when Im not reaching out to my friends. Its when I notice them asking me how Im doing and I respond with some shit like “good and how are YOUUU” because my scorpio ass loves to listen and not talk about my shit!!

    • Hi 🌸 Hope all is well. Here’s a pic of me “glorifying obesity” as they say, on this lovely Tuesday.
.
News - I just updated my amazon shop where you can look through categories Ive set up like “Plus Size Swim” and “Big & Tall Button Ups” to find affordable clothing and accessories. I try and make sure everything is available in at least 3x (and above). The “Personal Care” category is where Ive added tools to help with self care and fat accessibility. Theres furniture, foot care, and even anxiety tools. Oh, and I just added over 50 items to the “FALL FUN” category if that is your thing😂 Link is in the bio!

    • This is my first time trying yoga in a really long time. My body looks much different than the last time I did. In a way, I feel like Im learning my way around my body again. Figuring out how to move my belly around to reach optimal comfort and stretch. I started using joyn recently (@letsjoyn); an online streaming service for accessible yoga, dance, meditation and more. Its been such a meaningful experience to see bodies that look more like mine, moving and knowing their bodies. I wrote up a blog post about my experience with joyn and you can find the link in my bio and my stories! Thank you @letsjoyn for bringing accessible yoga into my life!

    • Hi I love this new tee from @bigboysarecute 👋 My fat body is politicized, scrutinized, and even dehumanized by a culture obsessed with thinness and dieting. My fat body is more regularly than not outcasted, forgotten, and made a mockery of. Its discouraging and Im exhausted by it. It really does feel like My Body vs Society a lot of the time. And I feel empowered bringing that to light with this tee. A good tshirt can be a great conversation starter. I love letting people know where my values are right off the bat!

In what ways do you feel like its “your body vs society?” What would make you feel more empowered?

    • I want to write a book. I want to travel the world. I want to make people smile. I want to teach classes. I want to create clothing. I want financial stability and even further - financial comfort. I want to make a difference. I want to own a home. I want to live in Mass part-time. I want to take care of my family. I want to learn how to manage my anxiety. I want to move my body more.
.
Just thinking about my goals lately and trying not to feel self conscious about sharing them. Im 27 and I don’t really know what Im doing. But I appreciate y’all for the love and kind words and for being here with me. What do you want in life? Whatre your goals?👇🏼
